From safe overnight ventilation to cleaning upper-floor glass without a ladder, uPVC tilt & turn windows solve the everyday problems that standard apartment windows simply cannot. Here is why so many people are switching.

If you live in a flat or manage a multi-storey building, you already know the problem with standard casement windows. They open outward. On the ground floor, that is fine. On the third floor, it is a cleaning headache, a safety concern, and in plenty of buildings, simply not allowed.
It is why uPVC tilt & turn windows have been the go-to choice across European apartment blocks for decades, and why UK developers, leaseholders, and homeowners are now making the switch in real numbers.
Here is what makes them so well suited to apartment living, and why so many people are choosing them over traditional alternatives.
A uPVC tilt & turn window works in two different ways, both controlled by a single handle. Rotate it 90 degrees, and the top of the sash tilts inward, letting fresh air in without fully opening the window. Rotate it 180 degrees and the whole sash swings inward on a side hinge, like a door, giving you full access to both sides of the glass from inside your room.
That inward-opening mechanism is what makes everything else possible. You never need to lean out, reach around, or drag a ladder out of the shed to clean or ventilate your windows. For anyone living above the ground floor, that is a meaningful change.
Casement windows are a practical, straightforward solution for houses. In apartments and multi-storey buildings, though, they create a set of problems that stack up quickly.
Cleaning the outer pane from an upper floor means leaning out of the frame, working from a ladder, or paying a window cleaner for what should be a routine job. In blocks with restricted exterior access, even that last option may not be straightforward.
Many buildings also have planning restrictions or building regulations that limit outward-opening windows, particularly where the opening could interfere with communal walkways, neighbouring properties, or shared outdoor spaces.
And then there is safety. An outward casement left on the latch can be forced more easily than most people realise. In rooms where children sleep or spend time, a wide-open outward window carries obvious risks that most parents would rather not think about.
Tilt & turn windows deal with all of this in a single product.
Safe, Secure Ventilation at Any Height: In tilt mode, the top of the window opens inward by a few inches. That gap is big enough to let air circulate properly but far too narrow for anyone to reach through or climb through. The window stays locked at the base, so it cannot be pushed open from outside.
If you live in a flat and have always felt uneasy about leaving a window open overnight, tilt mode solves that. Fresh air without the security compromise.
Clean Both Sides of the Glass from Inside the Room: This is the one that most flat residents notice first. In turn mode, the whole sash swings fully inward, so you can reach the outside face of the glass without leaving the room. No ladders, no leaning, no calling in a specialist window cleaner every few months.
It takes a few minutes, and anyone can do it safely. If you are five floors up in a city centre block, that is a genuinely useful thing.
Meets Building Regulations for Emergency Egress: Part B of UK Building Regulations requires that windows in certain rooms provide an opening large enough to use as an emergency escape route. The turn mode on a tilt & turn window provides a wide, unobstructed inward opening that meets this requirement, making them a compliant choice for bedroom installations in apartments and multi-storey developments.
No External Access Required: In a house, window maintenance usually involves working from outside at some point. In most apartments, that is simply not an option for residents. Because everything on a tilt & turn window can be done from inside, you are never dependent on external scaffolding, specialist contractors, or the building management arranging access. Routine cleaning and maintenance stay entirely in your hands.
Built-In Child Safety: In tilt mode, the restricted opening is not wide enough for a child to climb through or lean out dangerously. You can leave a room ventilated without needing to fit additional restrictors or keep a close eye on the window. The safety is built into how the mechanism works, not added on afterwards.
Side by side in an apartment setting, the differences between the two styles become pretty clear.
Casement windows are familiar, simple, and widely available. They work well in houses and low-rise settings. But they open outward, need external access for cleaning, offer limited security when open, and may not comply with building regulations in multi-storey developments.
uPVC tilt & turn windows open inward, let you clean both panes from inside, give you two ventilation modes with real security in tilt position, satisfy egress requirements in turn mode, and need no external access for any routine maintenance. For apartment use, they are the better product in almost every practical respect.
Very. Every uPVC tilt & turn window Ecologic installs is A-rated as standard.
The multi-point locking mechanism pulls the sash tight against the frame when closed, compressing the rubber seals all the way around and creating an exceptionally airtight fit. The result is excellent draught exclusion and thermal performance that goes well beyond current UK Building Regulations.
For apartments where heating bills are metered individually, that improved efficiency makes a real difference month to month. Triple glazing is also available as an upgrade, bringing enhanced U-values and noticeably better acoustic performance. If your flat is on a busy road or in a noisy part of town, it is an upgrade worth looking at seriously.
Ecologic uPVC tilt & turn windows come in 18 colour finishes applied directly to the uPVC profile, so they will not peel, fade, or need repainting further down the line. The range covers clean white, modern anthracite grey, warm woodgrain effects including rosewood and Irish oak, and a selection of heritage tones for period properties or conservation-adjacent developments.
Hardware comes in 7 furniture colours, and both bevelled and sculptured frame profiles are available across the full range. Whatever the building looks like, there are options that will suit it.
Every window we install comes with a proper guarantee behind it. That means a 10-year guarantee on all components and frames, a 20-year guarantee on all sealed glass units, and an insurance-backed Assure guarantee on every installation, underwritten independently.
These are not figures buried in small print. They reflect the quality of what we install and how we install it.
