Most windows are designed around what happens when you’re inside looking out. Fully reversible windows are designed around something more practical: what happens when you need to clean, ventilate, or maintain a window you can’t safely reach from the outside.

Rather than opening inward or outward like a conventional casement, the sash pivots on a central horizontal axis and rotates a full 180 degrees, bringing the outer face of the glass completely inside the room. No ladders. No scaffolding. No leaning out of the frame. Just a simple, controlled rotation that puts both sides of the glass within easy reach from indoors.

What Are Fully Reversible Windows?

A fully reversible window is mounted on a central pivot rather than a side or top hinge. This allows the sash to rotate up to 180 degrees, so the outer surface of the glass ends up facing inward into the room, making both sides fully accessible from inside the building.

Unlike a tilt and turn window, which swings inward on a side hinge, a reversible window rotates within the plane of the opening and needs far less space behind it to operate. Safety catches built into the pivot mechanism must be released deliberately before the full rotation completes, keeping everything controlled and secure throughout.

For ventilation, the sash can be held at any intermediate angle rather than completing the full rotation, giving precise control over airflow without fully opening the window.

How Do UPVC Reversible Windows Work?

The mechanism is simpler than most people expect:

• The sash sits on a central pivot rather than a hinge at the side or top.
• Releasing the safety catch allows the sash to rotate up to 180 degrees.
• Once rotated, both the inner and outer glass surfaces face into the room.
• A ratchet stay holds the sash at any angle for controlled ventilation.
• Child safety catches restrict how far the window can open for day-to-day use.

Because the rotation happens within the existing frame opening, reversible windows also need less clearance behind them than a tilt and turn window swinging fully into the room, which matters in tightly furnished spaces or narrow corridors.

Where Are Reversible Windows Used?

Fully reversible windows were developed for environments where cleaning and maintaining upper-floor glazing from the outside simply isn’t a realistic option.

Apartment blocks and multi-storey residential buildings: residents can rotate the sash inward and clean both surfaces of the glass from inside their own flat, with no specialist equipment or external access required.

Commercial and office buildings: reversible windows remove the need for abseiling operatives, cherry pickers, or window cleaning equipment on buildings where glazing would otherwise be inaccessible, simplifying facilities management and reducing ongoing costs.
