UPVC Reversible Windows

Of particular interest for commercial window installation, our reversible windows are A-rated, available in 18 colours, and rated for severe weather conditions.

UPVC Reversible Windows: Fully Reversible Design for Easy Indoor Cleaning

Most windows are designed around what happens when you’re inside looking out. Fully reversible windows are designed around something more practical: what happens when you need to clean, ventilate, or maintain a window you can’t safely reach from the outside.

Rather than opening inward or outward like a conventional casement, the sash pivots on a central horizontal axis and rotates a full 180 degrees, bringing the outer face of the glass completely inside the room. No ladders. No scaffolding. No leaning out of the frame. Just a simple, controlled rotation that puts both sides of the glass within easy reach from indoors.

Ecologic’s uPVC reversible windows are built on the VEKA system, A-rated as standard, and suited to upper-floor residential rooms, apartment blocks, commercial buildings, schools, care homes, and any environment where external window access is limited or unsafe.

What Are Fully Reversible Windows?

A fully reversible window is mounted on a central pivot rather than a side or top hinge. This allows the sash to rotate up to 180 degrees, so the outer surface of the glass ends up facing inward into the room, making both sides fully accessible from inside the building.

Unlike a tilt and turn window, which swings inward on a side hinge, a reversible window rotates within the plane of the opening and needs far less space behind it to operate. Safety catches built into the pivot mechanism must be released deliberately before the full rotation completes, keeping everything controlled and secure throughout.

For ventilation, the sash can be held at any intermediate angle rather than completing the full rotation, giving precise control over airflow without fully opening the window.

What is a reversible window used for? In short: safe cleaning, controlled ventilation, and low-maintenance access, particularly in buildings where getting outside to the glass isn’t practical or safe.

How Do UPVC Reversible Windows Work?

The mechanism is simpler than most people expect:

  • The sash sits on a central pivot rather than a hinge at the side or top.
  • Releasing the safety catch allows the sash to rotate up to 180 degrees.
  • Once rotated, both the inner and outer glass surfaces face into the room.
  • A ratchet stay holds the sash at any angle for controlled ventilation.
  • Child safety catches restrict how far the window can open for day-to-day use.

Because the rotation happens within the existing frame opening, reversible windows also need less clearance behind them than a tilt and turn window swinging fully into the room, which matters in tightly furnished spaces or narrow corridors.

Where Are Reversible Windows Used?

Fully reversible windows were developed for environments where cleaning and maintaining upper-floor glazing from the outside simply isn’t a realistic option.

Apartment blocks and multi-storey residential buildings: residents can rotate the sash inward and clean both surfaces of the glass from inside their own flat, with no specialist equipment or external access required.

Commercial and office buildings: reversible windows remove the need for abseiling operatives, cherry pickers, or window cleaning equipment on buildings where glazing would otherwise be inaccessible, simplifying facilities management and reducing ongoing costs.

Schools, hospitals, and care homes: settings where window safety, ventilation control, and low-disruption maintenance are critical requirements. Reversible windows handle all three within a single, straightforward mechanism.

Social housing and new build residential: residents can manage basic window maintenance themselves without specialist contractors, reducing the ongoing cost burden on landlords and improving long-term resident satisfaction.

Reversible Windows vs Tilt and Turn Windows: Which Is Right for Your Building?

Both window styles solve the challenge of safe cleaning and ventilation in buildings where outward-opening casements aren’t ideal, but they suit different situations.

Tilt and turn windows swing fully inward on a side hinge for cleaning, or tilt from the top for ventilation. Because the sash comes into the room, it needs clear space behind it to operate, which makes it a strong fit for residential rooms where that space exists.

Fully reversible windows rotate within the frame opening, demand far less room behind them, and give complete access to both glass faces. It’s the stronger specification choice for commercial buildings, larger openings, tightly furnished rooms, and any project where cleaning access from indoors is the primary driver.

If you’re weighing up reversible windows against tilt and turn windows for a specific project, our team can talk you through which spec suits your building, your budget, and your access requirements.

Built to Last, Designed to Perform

Energy Efficiency: A-Rated as Standard - Every Ecologic uPVC reversible window is A-rated as standard. The VEKA multi-chambered frame construction reduces thermal transfer, and precision weather seals compress tightly when the window is locked, eliminating draughts and preventing moisture ingress even in exposed, high-wind locations.

Double glazing with argon-filled cavities is included as standard, covered by a 20-year sealed unit guarantee. Triple glazing is available for enhanced thermal and acoustic performance, particularly well-suited to urban locations and buildings near busy roads or transport routes.

Security Built Into the Mechanism - Every Ecologic reversible window is fitted with a multi-point locking system as standard, engaging at multiple points around the frame when closed. Integrated safety catches in the pivot mechanism prevent accidental or unauthorised rotation, and child safety catches restrict the aperture to a safe opening width, allowing ventilation without creating a fall risk.

Colour, Style, and Specification - Choose from 18 colour finishes, including white, anthracite grey, and a range of woodgrain effects and heritage tones, all UV-stable and weather-resistant. Both sculptured and bevelled profiles are available to match the architectural character of residential or commercial buildings. Slim VEKA sight lines maximise the glazed area within each opening, bringing as much natural light into the room as the window size allows.
